Calculators and computers are used in our modern-day instead of abacuses, a calculating tool that has been in used since ancient times. It was used in the ancient Near East, China, Japan, and Russia, centuries before the adoption of the written Arabic numeral system.Abacuses still remain in common use in some countries by merchants, traders and clerks in some part of Eastern Europe and China. In school they are still used to teach arithmetic to children.
This painting is a juxtaposition of tropes and associative characteristics of different culture. The colors and shapes are communicating to each other in the technique of collage and overlap.
